A tiny mouse at a California zoo has been entered into the Guinness Book of World Records because of its age. At nine years and 209 days, the Pacific pocket mouse Pat is the world’s oldest living mouse, the San Diego Wildlife Alliance said after the certification ceremony.

With an average body length of 56.7 millimeters and a weight of seven to nine grams, the Pacific pocket mouse is the smallest mouse species in North America. It was thought to be extinct until 30 years ago, when isolated populations were discovered in Dana County and a breeding program was launched to conserve the species.

Born on July 4, 2013 and named after “Star Trek” actor Patrick Stewart, the Methuselah is part of this breeding program. The Pacific pocket mouse was once distributed from Los Angeles to the Tijuana River Valley. Dozens of young animals are to be released into the wild this spring.
