Kobe Bryant shirt fetches $5.8 million at auction
It was an accident that not only shocked basketball fans: in 2020, the popular Lakers player Kobe Bryant died together with his daughter. One of the star’s jerseys has now been auctioned off.
A basketball jersey worn by Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash in 2020, for the Los Angeles Lakers has fetched $5.8 million (about 5.4 million euros) at auction.
The purple and yellow jersey with the number 24 from the 2007/2008 season was the most valuable piece related to Bryant at the auction on Thursday, said the auction house Sotheby’s. It is the second most valuable basketball jersey in history – behind a legend Michael Jordan’s shirt at auction for over 10 million dollars. The then 41-year-old basketball star Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven other people died in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles in January 2020. They had been on their way to a girls’ basketball tournament.
