President Zelensky revealed that a plot discovered by the Russian secret services that planned to overthrow Moldova was foiled. “I informed the president of Moldova, Maya Sandu, that we are on a plan to destroy Moldova by Russian intelligence”

A Russian plot to overthrow the Moldovan government was foiled by Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told European Union leaders yesterday (Thursday). While it is unclear whether the Kremlin ordered the program, Zelensky claimed that the Russian secret services were the brains behind the malicious programs.

“I informed the president of Moldova, Maya Sandu, that we have a plan to destroy Moldova by Russian intelligence,” he said while speaking to leaders during a visit to Brussels. “Documents showed who, when and how there was a plan to crush Moldova’s democracy and establish control over it,” according to Zelensky.

The plan, which Zelensky said is similar to the failed Russian efforts to topple Kyiv, is not the first time Russian officials have planned to topple Moldova.

Just two months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a Russian general announced Moscow’s plans to take over eastern and southern Ukraine by seizing areas along the Black Sea, including as far west as Odessa, and from there reaching west into Moldova. Odessa not only shares a border with Moldova, but also with Transnistria, a region of Moldova with sympathetic ties to Russia.

It is unclear what Russia’s plans were in its latest plot, and the Moldovan government did not provide details about it, but stated that it had identified “subversive activities aimed at undermining the Republic of Moldova, destabilizing and disrupting public order,” Fox News reported. ‘.

“Currently, we cannot provide additional details because there is a risk of jeopardizing various operational activities,” Moldova’s intelligence and security service said in a statement confirming that they had received “information from our Ukrainian partners.”

Moldova’s intelligence agency warned last December that Russia may be planning to develop a land bridge between southern Ukraine and Transnistria – although Russian forces have remained stuck in southern Ukraine since withdrawing from the city of Kherson last November.
