Chennai,- 468 crore kg of rice to Tamil Nadu since April 2020 under the ‘Prime Minister’s Garib Kalyan’ scheme; It has also ‘supplied’ 26 crore kg of wheat for free.

Subsequently, the central government directed the state governments to provide free additional 5 kg of rice each to each member of the Prime Minister’s Garib Kalyan scheme, preferentially, on Antiyothaya ration cards.

In Tamil Nadu, 18.65 lakh Anthyothaya and 93 lakh priority card holders are given additional free rice.

For this, the Food Corporation of India allocates up to 18 crore kg of rice per month. In this scheme, at the end of 2020, 1 kg of wheat was provided free of cost.

Under the Garib Kalyan scheme, the scheme of providing free food grains has been successively extended till 2024.

The central government has so far provided 468 crore kg of rice and 26 crore kg of wheat to Tamil Nadu under the scheme.
