Coimbatore: Due to non-payment of property tax of Rs.1.25 crore, the Corporation officials yesterday closed and ‘sealed’ the shops in the ‘Cheran Towers’ commercial complex in Coimbatore.

In the Coimbatore Corporation, property tax collection has been intensified. A notice is issued to those who have not paid their dues for a long time. If tax is not paid after that, it is ‘sealed’.

In corporation-owned commercial premises, shopkeepers are being ‘sealed’ even if they do not pay rent.

Commissioner Pratap inspected the commercial complex in the 70th Ward, Flower Market area of ​​the Corporation yesterday. Seeing that the perimeter wall of the commercial complex had been demolished without permission, he ordered police to take appropriate action and to ‘seal’ the shops of those who had not paid rent for a long time. One shop was closed and ‘sealed’ for non-payment of rent for the offense of demolishing the perimeter wall without permission.

Similarly, a team headed by Zonal Assistant Revenue Officer Karthikeyan went to ‘Cheran Towers’ commercial complex on Govt Art College Road. Zonal Assistant Commissioner Mahesh Kanagaraj said that the management of the mall has a property tax arrears of Rs.1 crore, 25 lakhs. As the amount was not paid, they tried to completely close and ‘seal’ the business premises.

The mall owners said that some of the shops in the complex have been sold and the owners have to pay the tax. ‘The owners of the sold shops have not been renamed till date. There is property tax pending in the name of Cheran Towers. The corporation officials said that the cases in this regard are not under investigation and closed the shops and kept them ‘sealed’.

It is noteworthy that ‘Cheran Towers’ commercial complex is owned by former MP, KC Palaniswami.
