GM does not want to end exemption for electric cars

by time news

Anfavea is aligned to deliver to the federal government a new proposal revising the import tax exemption for electric cars, however, there is an exception in the entity that brings together the majority of vehicle manufacturers in the country, General Motors.

In the association, GM is the opposite movement to what the others are aiming for, since the American automaker has other plans for electrification and the exemption for electric cars is in its favor.

Santiago Chamorro, CEO of GM South America, spoke out against the entity’s decision. He said: “Closing the borders to vehicles in the country is closing the borders so that the consumer can experience this type of technology and also the benefits for the environment.”

Chamorro added, during the presentation of the New Chevrolet Montana to dealers: “This market advances because there are incentives. It’s not good to take them away.”

It is known in the automotive sector that of the major automakers, GM is the only one that has not sought any partnership to electrify its cars made in the country, with VW, Stellantis and others, seeking the flex hybrid.

At this point, Chamorro clarifies GM’s position: “All technologies have space in the market, but we must recognize that there are differences between them. The electric vehicle is categorically better than the hybrid for the environment.”

Chamorro’s speech is in line with Mary Barra’s in Detroit, where GM is leading the way to electrify its portfolio in order to completely abandon combustion engines in 2035.

What we can see in GM’s plans, at least abroad, is that there will still be a conventional range of cars, but electric ones will gain more space and attention in the coming years.

Here, as there is still no new program that pressures manufacturers towards the flex-fuel hybrid, GM maintains its position of continuing with common cars made in the region, but preparing its electric range from Mexico and the USA.

Models like the Bolt and Bolt EUV, which arrives this year, are just the beginning of the project, which will include new Equinox EV, Blazer EV and Silverado EV.

Still, what everyone asks is: will we have trams leaving São Caetano do Sul, São José dos Campos, Gravataí, Rosário and Bogotá in the coming years?
