Suvereto, wine is a family business: from peasant fiefdom to company in a generation

by time news

It was the fifties when the father of Nico Rossi, Amansio, you start with wine in Suvereto. The Notri locality, the Gualdo del Re company. There were 5 and a half hectares then today there are 22 in production plus three new ones that are being planted in Vermentino. The first bottlings date back to the early Eighties because in the Seventies the quintals of wine produced were sold in bulk. I was born here – explains Nico Rossi – and as a family we have always produced wine. We bought one vineyard after another with the salaries I saved from my job at the Magona industrial center in Piombino. This was a peasant fiefdom, my father had remained in the countryside and worked the vineyard. Over time, the passion for wine has grown within me and I have made it my main work activity. Today I am joined by my wife Mariateresa and my children Federico and Valentina, to whom I have dedicated the name of Vermentino.

It produces 60% of international and indigenous red berried wines as well as a Pinot Noir and the rest white wines: Vermentino and Pinot Bianco. The Pinot Bianco arrived in Suvereto by mistake, Amansio in fact had bought Chardonnay. So they told him – says Nico – in reality we discovered that it was Pinot. And stayed. We have not interrupted this sort of umbilical cord that binds us to the origins. And in the end it was one of the most popular wines. A very floral wine with hints of green apple in the mouth, very clear, vertical and fresh. The production is around 10,000 bottles and the consultant oenologist Barbara Tamburini.

The study over the years has focused on Merlot, Nico’s great passion, which comes out in two labels. I’Rennero, iconic Merlot for the company, from clayey and ferrous soils of the metalliferous hills, right next to the company and Quintor, newborn, who comes from a super selection within a single vineyard. From the exceptional nature of this wine, produced only in the best vintages, a project was also born, a unicum in partnership with the historic Moretti glass factory in Murano. The name “F” as a Family for the deep bond of wine to family management and as a fiasco to recover the Tuscan tradition. We have created 2000 bottles of the 2015 vintage specially created by the glassworks, blown one by one, all unique pieces. The cap guaranteed for life. A precious edition to give as a gift. A wine of great elegance and perfect balance, which combines small fruit such as black cherry with intriguing and spicy hints of spice. The company also includes a farmhouse and a bistro restaurant which is also open to outsiders.
