Tomorrow, February 10, 2023, at 6:00 p.m., you can enjoy the “Meeting on site: Sciences in Spatialism” at 6:00 p.m. at the Center Pompidou Málaga. I will talk about science (especially physics) in line with the works of the exhibition “Recto-Verso” by Lucio Fontana, founder of spatialism. As he tells us in his White Manifesto (1946) deals with “the development of an art based on the unity of time and space”, what we physicists call relativistic spacetime. The idea of my talk is to present, from the point of view of a physicist, how quantum physics and relativistic physics could inspire the creative ideas of spatialism.

Fontana’s work is inspired by the science of the first half of the 20th century. Perhaps the most obvious is his series “Quanta”, a tribute to Max Planck (in “Recto-Verso” no work from this series is exhibited); this series anticipates his series of «Tajos», spatial concepts that will serve as an excuse to talk about different aspects of quantum physics. But, without a doubt, the great common thread in Fontana’s work is relativistic spacetime, which will be the inspiration for much of my talk. Without forgetting the importance of light, both reflections and shadows. As my knowledge of art history is very limited, I can only promise that there will be a lot of science in my talk and that I hope it will help you to enjoy Fontana’s work exhibited in Malaga with new eyes.

I will be accompanied by Gabriela Giménez de la Riva, from Pompidou Cultural Mediation. If you are interested in attending, free registration is done on the website “Meeting on site: Sciences in Spatialism”, Center Pompidou Málaga. You can enjoy the spatial concepts of Fontana treasured by the Pompidou on this web page.
