The bankruptcy proceedings of companies reached 367 registrations in January, which represents an increase of 12.6% compared to the same month of 2022, according to the advance of the monthly data published this Thursday by the College of Registrars.

The Registrars explain in their report that during 2022, the bankruptcies showed ups and downs in the data until June, highlighting the significant decrease of 16.8% in April.

However, in June the bankruptcy moratorium ended, which has set the trend in recent months with significant increases, highlighting the 42.2% increase in the fourth quarter. But the more moderate data for the month of January seem to show a slowdown in the effect of the moratorium that will have to be confirmed in the coming months.

As for their distinction between voluntary and necessary contests, the former totaled 254 registrations in January, which represents a 12.4% increase over the same month in 2022, while the necessary ones were 113, with an annual increase of 13%.

According to the report, the strong incidence of Madrid, Catalonia and the Valencian Community stands out in the number of competitions, since together they show more than seven out of every ten presented.

Specifically, Catalonia and Madrid registered 105 bankruptcies each in the first month of the year, which represents an increase of 45.8% and 32.9%, respectively, compared to the previous year. Behind, the Valencian Community registered 52 contests, the same figure as last year; Andalusia, 29 (+20.8%) and the Basque Country, 18 (same number).

On the other hand, the constitutions in January increased 14.9%, continuing the recovery observed in the third quarter of the year that alternated positive and negative monthly data, after five months of consecutive falls. Specifically, 9,470 companies have been created, compared to 8,241 in the same month of the previous year.
