How the 1 euro meal for (all) students was defended or denounced by MEPs

by time news

On Thursday, the National Assembly rejected – by one vote (183 for and 184 against) – a bill aimed at ensuring a meal at 1 euro for any young person following higher education, without proof of resources. Today, only precarious students and scholarship holders benefit from meals at 1 euro served in Crous catering outlets. Here is what was said in the National Assembly during the debate…

A demagogic measure?

For Alexandre Portier, LR deputy, “the idea is unfair, infantilizing and terribly demagogic. Since when did it become abnormal to have to make an effort to succeed? Since when did it become abnormal to have to fight to finance your studies? “. His proposal? “That any student who wishes to benefit from this meal at 1 euro commits in return, 2 hours per week, to the service of a local community. »

Louis Boyard, deputy Nupes, unfolds the charges to which students are subject: “563 euros of rent to be paid on average, 250 euros of hygiene and food products, 30 euros of Internet and telephone, 100 euros of gas and electricity, 30 euros for transport. Which family is able to give, each month, 973 euros to their child so that he can even live during his studies? »

Anne Brugnera, Renaissance MP, thinks that this measure would harm university restaurants. Caroline Parmentier, RN deputy, offers a meal at 2 euros for all. Anne Le Hénanff, MP Horizons and relatives, prefers to perpetuate the current situation: “Today, we have to reach out to these students who are still too often unaware of their rights. We must inform them of the possibility of making a request to the Crous in order to benefit from this reduced rate. »
