Nickel supports transgender and non-binary people by becoming one of the first entities to offer the Mastercard True Name option on their cards

by time news

The Nickel Account is proud to announce that its customers will soon have access to Mastercard’s True Name™ option. This will allow cardholders to use the name they choose on their payment card, rather than the name that appears on their ID, helping to alleviate a sore spot for transgender and non-binary communities.

According to a study published in the middle of last year by Mastercard, more than half of the population in Spain (53%) affirm that they understand that there are people who prefer not to identify themselves as men or women. In addition, the study highlights that more than 40% of the Spanish population states that they prefer to work in a company that accepts and recognizes non-binary people, and that 28% prefers to buy products and contract services from companies that take into account non-binary people.

In this sense, Nickel and Mastercard share the belief that everyone should have access to payment methods that represent their true identity. As such, True Name™ goes a long way in removing a barrier for transgender and non-binary people by allowing them to safely and easily use their real name for everyday purchases.

Starting today, all Nickel customers who wish will be able to add the name they prefer to their My Nickel, Nickel Premium and Nickel Metal cards without having to justify themselves. The True Name option is integrated into the application process for such cards.

True NameTM is available to Nickel customers in France and Spain starting today, and will also be extended to its Belgian and Portuguese customers in the second quarter of 2023.

Monica Correia, CEO of Nickel Spain, has stated that: “We believe that it is essential that our customers have the opportunity to put on their card the name with which they really identify themselves and that their identity is reflected in a simple and secure way. Therefore, integrating True Name™ into our offering seemed natural to us: inclusion and fairness are part of our DNA. Nickel is the account for everyone, without any kind of distinction”.

Geoffroy SeghettiMastercard’s Vice President of Marketing and Communication for Western Europe and co-leader of the company’s Pride team, highlighted that: “We are pleased to see Nickel partner with Mastercard to offer True Name™ and allow transgender and non-binary people the access that everyone else enjoys, with their true identity and, most importantly, facilitate their daily lives without fear to discrimination. We share with Nickel the values of inclusion and equity, and the fight against all forms of discrimination”.
