VIDEO. “Doing physical activity during a pollution peak is extremely dangerous”

by time news

The cloud of pollution which is struggling to leave Paris does not discourage joggers, in number this Tuesday, February 14 in the streets of the capital. But while the fine particle pollution alert threshold is exceeded in several regions of France, is it really advisable to practice physical activity outdoors? For the sports doctor François Deroche, the answer is clear: “it’s extremely dangerous”, he asserts.

For this health professional, the benefits of sports practice are less than the effects caused by a pollution peak. “When you run, you can absorb up to nine times more fine particles than someone walking,” he warns. These particles, which are very harmful to humans, can in particular lead to “cancers, lung attacks but also strokes”, lists the doctor.

But if you are a sports enthusiast, alternatives are still possible. The main thing is to run in areas as far away as possible from vehicles and the polluted area, to reduce your running pace or to breathe through your nose rather than your mouth. But it’s even better to “stay at home with a book”, assures François Deroche with a smile.
