Ben Caspit: The fate of the country is at stake, this is not the time for hand bending games

by time news

There is no doubt that the hasty political revolution taking place here is done in bad faith. Two days ago, in an interview with Sharon Gal, Minister Avi Dichter revealed the incredible truth that in Likud, the ruling party, there was no serious discussion of what they call “legal reform”. No discussion. is nothing.

On the way to an agreement on the reform? Herzog met with Lapid, Gantz and Rothman
On the way to the talks? The coalition agreed to postpone the vote on the articles of the reform
A ‘Maariv’ commentator explains: Where is Rothman heading in the talks about the reform?

It took minister Yariv Levin only 6 days after the formation of the government to present the (partial) principles of the coup, to start the bulldozer and get going. Before the last elections, Ofer Golan, Netanyahu’s spokesman, gave the following briefing to Likud Knesset members: “Hi. Regarding the legal system, please note: everyone understands that the legal system needs reform, and we will do it with discretion, communication and responsibility.’

Well, our eyes see. Discretion? Even in Likud there was no serious discussion about the “reform”. Conversation? Mostly a joke. responsibility? In view of the wall-to-wall warnings of all the respected economists in the Western world and all the important jurists in Israel and the world, the fleet of bulldozers that is now racing to the hill has no trace of responsibility. After the catastrophe, they will probably claim that they have responsibility, but they are not to blame. Or the other way around (a.k.a. Amir Ohana after the Miron disaster).
And having said all this, the leaders of the change block, the people of the protest and its leaders, should give a chance to talk. No, we mustn’t stop, as long as Rothman and Levin continue to gallop forward. Yes, you should reach out and give a chance to the negotiators, if they are willing to freeze all the moves. Yair Lapid was wrong when he talked about 60 days. He knows it’s an unrealistic number. He knows that Netanyahu’s agreement to a two-month freeze will humiliate him in front of the base and the coalition. There is no need for that.

This is not the time for political hand wringing games. The fate of the country is at stake. Too many things are hanging in the balance. After the dust settles and the smoke clears, the survivors will emerge from the ruins and try to figure out who is to blame for what happened. The one to blame will be the one who did not agree to exhaust the effort to reach an agreement. It is possible to freeze the legislation for two or three weeks and open honest, real and deep talks under the auspices of the president of the country.

In two or three weeks you can understand if there is something to talk about, or with whom to talk. there is? Alright, let’s continue the negotiations. nothing? Each side will return to its turn. Those for expedited legislation and those for powerful protest. We owe this effort to ourselves, our children and our country. No need to put a finger in the eye. There will be plenty of time for that later.
