Theni: Driver Balakrishnan, 49, at Theni Government Bus Depot protested against non-payment of sewing wages for uniforms by the Transport Corporation by covering his body with a khaki colored cloth.

Balakrishnan, a government bus driver from Jayamangalam, Periyakulam taluk. He is the State General Secretary of Labor Legal Rights Union. He came to work at Depto in Palanichettipatti yesterday. He wrapped the uniform cloth given to him by the Transport Corporation a few days ago as a top and took part in the protest in the office.

He said: 4 uniforms should be provided per year. For three years, the government did not provide uniforms to the workers. There is no provision of tailoring wages for sewing uniforms for 12 years. The cost of sewing a ‘set’ uniform is Rs.440. Applying for tailoring wages is of no use. .

I asked for details in the Right to Information Act. In the reply letter given on March 8, 2021, “Uniforms were not provided until 2017-2018. 2 sets of uniforms were provided in 2018–2019. In 2019– 2020 only one ‘Set’ was awarded. It has been reported that since 2013, tailoring wages have not been paid due to the financial situation of the government. So I asked for permission to work wearing the uniform as a top, but it was not allowed. Due to this, I am involved in modern struggle, he said.

Theni Divisional Manager Natarajan said, ‘Behaving like this during work. It is an offense under the Government Servant Conduct Code. Dindigul General Manager has been informed about this. Departmental action will be taken’, he said.
