BENGALURU – The Education Department has given the authority to grant permission to start new schools to the Deputy Director of the respective districts.

Before high school classes, apart from Kannada schools, schools in languages other than Kannada had to be approved by the Education Commissioner.

Due to this practice, approval of new schools is delayed. Managements of private schools, which do not receive government funding, have accused it of paving the way for corruption.

Currently, an amendment has been brought in the Karnataka Educational Institutions Control Act.

Accordingly, for nursery schools as before, the respective block education officers; The Deputy Director of Education Department of the respective district has been empowered and ordered to open new schools from Class I to Class 10 regardless of language.

It is to be noted that earlier this power was vested with the Commissioner of the State Education Department.
