Background

Motorists are happy that petrol and diesel prices have remained unchanged in Chennai for the 9th consecutive month.

Price unchanged after 9 months

Due to the lockdown imposed due to the corona virus infection, the public suffered a huge economic impact. Considering this, on November 4, 2021, the central government will increase the price of petrol per liter to Rs. 5, diesel price was reduced by Rs.10 and sold. Petrol was sold at Rs 101.40 per liter and diesel at Rs 91.43 per liter in Tamil Nadu on that day.

After that 5 months later on May 22 last year there was a change in petrol and diesel prices. At that time, due to the reduction in excise duty, the price of a liter of petrol fell by 8 rupees and the price of diesel by 6 rupees. In this context, petrol and diesel prices are being sold without change for the 276th consecutive day.

Accordingly, today (February 21), petrol price is Rs.102.63 per liter and diesel price is Rs.94.24 per liter. Earlier, the price of milk, tea, vegetables and other food items had gone up due to the rise in fuel prices. In this situation, petrol and diesel prices have remained unchanged for almost 9 months, which has caused happiness among the people.

Ethanol Blended Gasoline

The National Biofuel Policy announced by the Central Government in 2018 set a target of 20 percent ethanol in petrol by 2030. However, that target has now been revised five years earlier to 2025.

Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told Petroleum and that “20 percent ethanol blended petrol will be available in the country from December or January”. Speaking to the media, he said, “We are constantly looking at ethanol production. I believe 20 percent of the blended fuel will hit the market in December or January before April 2023.”

Citing the example of Brazil, where flex-fuel vehicles (mixed fuel vehicles) are available, Hardeep Singh Puri said, “Consumers can choose either ethanol or petrol. This will be the ultimate goal of the government.

However, to achieve that level, there are some technical aspects. For that, work is going on. We are going to have a major meeting with automobile manufacturers on ethanol adulteration. India has advanced the target date of achieving 20 percent ethanol blending in petrol by 2025 by five years.

For blending 20 percent ethanol in petrol, our country needs 1,000 core liter capacity. 450 crore liters are being produced. A tender has been floated for 400 crore litres. Sufficient ethanol is available for a 20 percent dilution. By 2025, a target of 20 per cent ethanol has been set in all petrol sold in the country,” he said.
