Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that he is waging a war with Ukraine for the sake of Russia’s existence.

As Russia’s war on Ukraine approaches a year, President Putin addressed the country’s elite today (Tuesday). He then said: “You know that we (Russia) are in a difficult, painful, yet historically important moment for the future of our country and people.

We were very patient so that this conflict (Ukraine war) should not happen. We did everything possible for this. We tried to solve the problem peacefully. We tried to leave peacefully. But the West, led by the US, took all necessary steps to stab us in the back. With Western support, Ukraine planned to invade Crimea. They are the ones who started this war. They strive for unfettered power in the world.

For us it is a battle for our existence. Our existence is now under threat. This is actually a local conflict. But they portray it as an international conflict. We understand this. We reply accordingly. They started this conflict by miscalculating that they could defeat Russia. Russia can never be defeated.

Western countries have occupied the political, military and economic structures of Ukraine. We are making progress in this conflict. One fifth of Ukraine is under our control. But the West is trying to control Russia and steal its natural resources. There is no reason to expand NATO eastward. However, they are trying to do so and now they are facing failure,” said Putin.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden made a surprise visit to the capital of Ukraine, Kiev, and held important talks with President Zelensky.
