Rs.1450 crore has been allocated for the project of bringing water directly from lower camp Mullai Periyar through pipeline for Madurai drinking water and the work is going on in full swing.

The construction of a reservoir tank with a capacity of 27 lakh liters is in progress. As the water is coming in the river, a barrage and retaining wall have been completed in one area.

In another part of this, water should be completely stopped in the river for dam construction works.

Usually every year after the second phase of paddy cultivation is over, the water from Periyar Dam is stopped in March, April and May. Despite this, 100 cubic feet per second is pumped out for drinking water.

At present, there is no possibility of opening the water when the barrage is constructed across the river for the Madurai drinking water project, officials said.

Risk of water scarcity

If there is no water in the river, there will be a shortage of drinking water in villages like Karunakkamuthanpatti, Kullappakoundanpatti, Surulipatti, Narayanathevanpatti, Ankurpalayam, which supply drinking water directly by pumping.

Alternate arrangement

It is necessary to make alternative arrangements for drinking water for the villages during the construction of dams in the river.

Also, steps should be taken to complete the construction of the barrage as soon as the water has to be released for cultivation in June.

People have insisted that the works should be carried out in such a way that there is no water problem for drinking water and agriculture.
