It is said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and for children, this is especially true when it comes to egg consumption. New research reveals that eggs are an essential nutritional component for young children, and consuming them on a daily basis can ensure they are one of the top students in their class.

Researchers from Washington University in St. Louis conducted an experiment with babies aged six to nine months in Ecuador. Some of the randomly selected participants were assigned to add an egg to their diet every day for a period of six months, while others were part of a control group that did not eat eggs.

It was later found that the group of babies who consumed eggs daily had a 47% lower risk of experiencing constipation, meaning slow height development. Moreover, 74 percent were less likely to be underweight than children in the control group.

“We were surprised by how effective this intervention proved to be,” says lead researcher Laura Iannotti, “the effect size was 0.63 compared to the global average of 0.39.”

It should also be mentioned that the levels of sugar consumption were limited among the participants in the test group. However, this research presents a solution to malnutrition in areas that lack access to proper nutrition, as eggs not only offer a balanced meal that is easy to find, but it often comes in safe packaging.

“Our study carefully monitored allergic reactions to eggs, yet no incidents were observed or reported by the caregivers during the weekly home visits,” Iannotti adds, “It appears that eggs are a sustainable and recommended source of nutrition for children in developing countries.”
