When building relations with NATO, Ukraine needs to follow the example of Finland. This opinion was expressed by the chairman of the Munich International Security Conference, German diplomat Wolfgang Ischinger in an interview with Handelsblatt.

“We could recommend that Ukraine, in the long term, start following an example from the Finns. Finland is a member of the EU, but not NATO, ”the diplomat said.

White House responds to Putin’s demand for guarantees of non-expansion of NATO

According to him, Russia has long feared Ukraine’s NATO membership, which is a “red line” for Moscow. However, Ischinger did not rule out that in the future Ukraine will be admitted to the North Atlantic Alliance.

On December 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin invited NATO to begin substantive negotiations to legally guarantee NATO’s eastward expansion. He noted that Moscow will seek “reliable and long-term security guarantees” in negotiations with Washington and its partners, and will also continue to “insist on the development of specific agreements that would exclude any NATO moves eastward.”
