Leningrad Region residents opposed the construction of a landfill | News from Germany about Russia

In the village of Nevskaya Dubrovka in the Leningrad region on Sunday, December 5, a popular gathering was held against the construction of a waste treatment complex and a landfill on the lands of the Dubrovka open pit. According to the online edition 47news.ru, more than 500 people took part in this action.

Meanwhile, the Dozhd TV channel reports that people from more than 15 nearby settlements, including families with children, came to the gathering. One of the participants in the event brought with her a poster with a quote from one of the speeches of Russian President Vladimir Putin: “It is important to take the opinion of citizens into account when building waste processing facilities.”

Another woman was holding a poster with the slogan: “We do not want to live in a landfill – we are not rats.” Every now and then the audience chanted the word “Against”. It is noted that the action lasted about an hour and passed without detention. The participants of the gathering collected signatures against the construction of the landfill, the police did not interfere with them.

A day earlier, a rally against the construction of an incineration plant at the site of the Ostrovsky quarry was held in the village of Ogonki in the Leningrad Region. Several hundred people also took part in this action.

According to 47news.ru, the St. Petersburg regional operator NEO plans to build waste processing complexes in the Leningrad Region at the site of the Dubrovka quarry in the Vsevolozhsk region, on the lands of the Ostrovsky quarry in Vyborgsky, as well as at the Brandovka quarry in Lomonosovsky.

Based on the design documentation, each of these complexes will have a landfill for placing garbage that cannot be recycled. In early December 2021, the Leningrad Region Committee for Waste Management sent a letter to NEO, in which it demanded that the tender for the design of plants be canceled as premature.
