Ukraine, nine years at war… for now.- Francisco José Dacoba Cerviño
The invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 is just one more chapter in a war that dates back at least to 2014, the year in which the Crimean peninsula was annexed and the Kremlin took control of part of the Donbas region.
After the fighting of the last year and the relative slowdown in military operations with the arrival of winter, all options for intensifying the fighting in the coming weeks are open. Their outcome will depend on the remaining forces of both contenders. Russia will have taken advantage of the pause to recover from the setbacks suffered in the preceding months. Ukraine, for its part, will have to wait for the arrival of the reinforcements promised by the core of countries that support it.
In any case, we are headed for a long-running conflict.
