Former Brazil soccer player Marcelo returns to his hometown club Fluminense Rio de Janeiro.

The left-back has signed a contract until December 2024 with an option to extend it until the end of 2025, according to Fluminense, one of the four big clubs in the Brazilian metropolis.

Marcelo should therefore come to Rio de Janeiro in around two weeks and be registered for the Copa Libertadores, the South American version of the Champions League. He had only recently left Olympiakos Piraeus after a few months.

“It’s difficult to express what this moment means for me,” said Marcelo, who comes from the youth of Fluminense: “For many years I dreamed of returning to my origins, to the team that trained me and taught me everything what I know about football.”

Fluminense maintains a training center in Xerém in the mountains behind Rio. At the beginning of 2007, the now 34-year-old switched from Fluminense to Real Madrid, where he played until last year and won a total of 25 titles, including five times the Champions League alone. Marcelo also made 58 appearances for the Brazilian national team, including at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. (dpa)
