Macron: EU-Mercosur deal ‘not possible’ because Latin America violates rules – News

French President Emmanuel Macron warned this Saturday (25) that a trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur countries “is not possible” if Latin Americans do not respect environmental standards like Europeans.

“An agreement with Latin American countries is not possible if they do not respect the Paris agreements [que envolve o clima] like us and if they don’t respect the same environmental and health restrictions that we impose on our producers,” declared Macron, shortly before a major national agricultural fair.

Visit to China

The French president took the opportunity to announce that he will travel to China “in early April” and called on Beijing to “help put pressure on Russia” to “contain aggression” against Ukraine and “build peace”.

Last Friday, China published a 12-point document calling for peace talks and “a political solution” between the parties.

Macron considered that this peace “is only possible if it includes the end of Russian aggression, the withdrawal of troops and respect for the territorial sovereignty and the Ukrainian people”.
