Rare snow in Los Angeles: thousands of homes were cut off from electricity

by time news

Unusual snow: A rare snowstorm was recorded over the weekend in Los Angeles and other areas of Southern California, which are not usually used to low temperatures and snow. The storm, which was described as the most extreme weather event in the country in many years, also brought heavy rains that caused flooding, and strong winds that caused the collapse of trees throughout the city.

According to reports in the American media, over 120,000 homes were cut off from electricity due to the weather hazards. The flooding and snow also blocked many roads – including Highway 5, which serves as one of the main traffic routes along the west coast of the USA.

Already last Friday, the authorities in Los Angeles issued a blizzard warning in the city, the first time such a warning has been issued since 1989. Today the warning was extended to also include the strong winds and possible mudslides.

It was reported in the local media that areas at a height of over 300 meters above sea level were covered in snow in the last two days, along with several suburbs north of the city. Among other things, the snowflakes covered the Hollywood sign, which is considered one of the symbols of the city. In the higher mountains, heavy snows were recorded – with the record recorded at a resort in the San Gabriel Mountains, where snow was reported to have piled up to a height of 205 centimeters.

The snow also reached the border between California and Nevada, where it was reported about 60 cm of snow – and it is estimated that this number will double in the next day. Arizona, a state that is mostly desert, is also preparing for the snow that is expected to arrive in the coming days.
