The agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union on the Northern Ireland protocol has been reached. This is what the BBC reports, citing government sources. According to a government source, the agreement was formalized during the meeting that took place in a hotel in Windsor between the British prime minister Rishi Sunak and the president of the European Commission Ursula Von der Leyen. The new post-Brexit trade rules for Northern Ireland they will allow Downing Street to have better ties with the European Union and the United States but they could cause some trouble within the Conservative Party.
The Gods leaders will hold a joint press conference at 15:30 London time, 16:30 in Italy. The deal seeks to resolve tensions caused by post-Brexit deals since 2020 which regulate the passage of goods between Northern Irelandwhich is a British province, and neighboring Ireland, a member of the EU.
New deal should ease physical checks of goods flowing from Britain to Northern Ireland, and should give Northern Irish lawmakers a say on the rules to be implemented after Great Britain leaves the Union.
But the deal’s success will depend on whether it convinces the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to end it to boycott the agreements of power sharing in Ireland. In 1998, the Good Friday Agreement ended three decades of violence in provincial Britain. Now the lawyers of the Dup they are going through the text line by line to verify that everything is according to the agreements. Party leader Jeffrey Donaldson said who will calmly decide whether to accept it.
The win would strengthen Sunak’s grip on the Conservative Party and allow him to get through the most contentious issue on his agenda, while also hard at work to counter the Labor opposition which is well ahead in the polls ahead of next year’s general election. If Sunak fails he could face a rebellion by the Eurosceptic wing of his party.
