Khushpu, who was the top star of Tamil cinema in the 90s to the extent that his fans built a temple and worshiped him, maintained a close relationship with the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa through a small screen show. As a result, he was expected to join the AIADMK, but in May 2010, he joined the DMK in the presence of the then Chief Minister Karunanidhi.
After that, Khushboo quit the DMK in June 2014 and joined the National Congress in November of the same year after meeting the then Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi.

Meanwhile, Khushboo had criticized the BJP in the Congress protest held in Chennai demanding justice for the Hadhras rape incident in Uttar Pradesh in 2020. A few days later, Khushboo resigned from the Congress in October and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on the same day.
BJP has fielded Khushbu from the Aayur Lanmut constituency in Chennai for the 2021 assembly elections. He lost the election to DMK candidate Ezhilan by a margin of 32,200 votes.
