Seven decades and 16 World Cups later, the Frenchman Just Fontaine, who died on Wednesday, still holds the record for the number of goals scored in a single World Cup: 13, during the 1958 edition in Sweden, finished in 3rd place with the Blues.
He is ahead of the Hungarian striker Sandor Kocsis, author of 11 goals in 1954. Died in 1979 in Barcelona, where he ended his career, the Hungarian did not however score in the final lost against the FRG (3-2) . Third place is the property of the German Gerd Müller, with ten goals scored during the 1970 edition in Mexico. Despite “Der Bomber” (“The bomber”), the FRG finished 3rd in this event, won by Pelé’s Brazil.
Died in 2021, Müller is also on the podium (3rd) of scorers in the World Cups, since he scored four other goals in 1974, which places him with 14 goals just ahead of Fontaine and … Lionel Messi (13) . The German is overtaken by the Brazilian Ronaldo (15 goals) and his compatriot Miroslav Klose, who tops the standings with 16 goals.
