The self-advocacy program intended for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, which has been operating for the past 12 years since the foundation of the leadership program of Beit Izzy Shapira and Alvin Israel, has been selected as a program to be tested by the leading European organization – Zero Project – when the award will be presented in Vienna, Austria, in a ceremony with the participation of 800 people from over 80 countries.

“Nothing about us – without us” is the most important call of disabled movements in the world. These movements strive for equal rights and prevention of discrimination in all areas of life. People with disabilities insisted that the decisions regarding them should not be made by professionals as experts in their case, but with their participation as an expert in their lives.

The leadership center at Beit Izzi Shapira adopted this call and placed the participation of the disabled in social life, education, housing and employment as a basic right. In this framework, people with disabilities in the leadership center insist that decisions about them will not be made by professionals, but with their participation as experts in their lives.

This is a significant recognition of the work of Beit Izzi Shapira, when as of today there are 8 local self-advocacy groups operating in Israel. One of these groups is a national leadership group, with representatives of all groups. The national leadership group works at the national level to promote policy on issues concerning all people with developmental intellectual disabilities, in front of the government ministries, revenue, organizations that provide services to people with disabilities with an emphasis on local issues.

The Zero Project organization is an international organization that focuses on the rights of people with disabilities. The goal of the organization is to reduce the barriers facing people with disabilities all over the world. The organization does this by globally sharing models that improve the daily lives and rights of all people with disabilities. Every year the organization holds an international conference in Vienna, where groundbreaking projects from around the world are selected to receive an award.
