The second episode of the popular action game Fortnite ended in a rather dramatic event: the whole island was turned upside down, and millions of players found themselves for several hours floating on the water. Now begins the first season of the third episode, and this brings with it an unprecedented list of innovations – perhaps the most significant since the launch of Battle Royale mode.
First to the island, which is completely new (the previous island “disappeared” under the water). Aside from new design and areas, the new island has unexpected weather phenomena such as a tornado that may occur suddenly. The third episode also brings with it characters such as Spider-Man, the Warriors from the Gears of War series, and other new heroes.
The main innovation, however, is that it is now possible to gain XP experience points in different game modes and actions – and not necessarily victories in Battle Royale battles. Teams can also set up a “camp”, heal from injuries and store objects that continue with all the team players for the next battle. There are also new abilities for all the characters such as jumping between ropes (Spider-Man style) and surfing, and these will allow you to move faster and dodge fire.
The best players now offer Epic a new level of honor in the form of the Victory Crown, but they are required to continue to win battles in order to keep it with them. Fortnite remains of course a free game, available for download for almost all platforms: mobile devices, consoles and PC.
