Strangling since the opening words “Delayer” by Valeria Apicella who opened the third and final 2021 tranche of the Campania Teatro Festival. Dark in the room. Turn off cell phones. While the voice reminds the public, in the hall of the Teatro Nuovo, there is one who impertinently begins to send music. Amid the general embarrassment – everyone feels guilty and fears it is his own – we discover with relief that this time it is the artist’s smartphone that is playing: this “digital prosthesis” – as Marshall McLuhan had anticipated in advance – is the genetic mechanism of ‘artistic installation. The dancer – who embodies the collective metaphor of a us made of herself (she is herself but all of us at the same time) – assumes the mobile phone as the fifth digital limb. The phone screen – placed on a tripod – becomes a very faithful yet distorting mirror, objective yet the result of augmented reality, in any case the surface of a dreamlike projection. In the videos – edited by Cyril Beghin – the action of the body is repeated as an echo would do, like the image reflected in several mirrors but with a staggered rhythm. And the effect is delayer, precisely that of a device that creates a delay in the transmission of a signal in a circuit.
Born during the lockdown
“The performance investigates the imaginative space between a body in presence and its projections, focusing on the delay that opens up between these worlds, and enhances its poetics, instant by instant,” writes Apicella. And in the project, born during the first lockdown, the flesh becomes virtual and the virtual becomes “digital flesh” or what we all risk being today and perhaps already are. The tutu becomes a bridal veil but also a noose of a woman dancing in the digital storm that continues to be archaic, paternalistic and violent. We have to thank this elegant Napoleonic dancer, who smoothes muscles and synapses with grace and depth, who shapes the gesture and makes it an inner act.
