The 78-year-old Canadian singer Johnny Mitchell arrived last night for the first time at a public and festive event, in order to receive one of the most prestigious awards in the American cultural world, “Canadian Center”. During the incident, Mitchell first spoke about the stroke she had in 2015 and almost took her own life and the health difficulties he brought with him.
The ceremony was held in Washington, D.C., in the presence of US President Joe Biden, during which the singer said the stroke made her lose the ability to walk and talk. ‘The last period has been very challenging. “I’m fine overall, I’m going slowly, trying to get back to myself,” Mitchell said.
Regarding the prestigious award, Mitchell said she is excited and feeling lucky, and even went on to say that it is a fantastic honor. Last year, the singer was interviewed by the Guardian magazine and said that she had to learn to walk again, while she could not even speak following the stroke. “Even polio did not catch me that way, the stroke took a lot more from me,” she said.
As is well known, over the years the singer has had to deal with various consequences of the polio she contracted as a little girl, until the fifties of her life. ‘I was sick when I was only nine, my spine was spinning, just like after an accident. “I could not walk, I was completely paralyzed,” said Mitchell.
During the ceremony, which was attended by many stars, the prestigious award was also won by Motown record company Barry Gordy, opera singer Justino Diaz, and the creator of the popular Saturday Night Live program, Lauren Michaels.
