Dancing on prescription for people with Parkinson’s

by time news

Dance classes for people with Parkinson’s will start at four locations in the province of Groningen from Friday 17 March. Dance on Recipe, as the series is called, contributes to the quality of life of people with a chronic disease, such as Parkinson’s.

The special dance lessons are in Groningen, Hoogezand, Appingedam and Leek. The dance workshops are in Appingedam in Kabzëel from 9.30 to 10.30 am “Dancing connects and relaxes. It gives people the feeling that they belong and matter,” says creator Marlien Seinstra, who rolled out Dans op Recept in Friesland in 2016. Since then, a team of specially trained dance teachers has been giving dance lessons to people with Parkinson’s every week throughout the province.

Dancing has a positive effect on disease symptoms, self-confidence and the quality of life of people with Parkinson’s disease. This has emerged from scientific research by Revalidation Center Friesland with Parkinson Center Nijmegen, led by Professor of Neurology Bas Bloem. A participant: “The secret of an activity like this is that you come into a group where there is a great atmosphere. An atmosphere of you belongs, you are needed, you are useful.”

Dance on Recipe therefore emphasizes the resilience, self-direction and adaptability of people. And not the limitations or illness itself.

The series consists of 34 teaching weeks. Dance experience is not necessary. Dance on Recipe is a creative and cultural activity: not only is physical and mental well-being strengthened, but an artistic presentation is also being worked on. The lessons are always concluded at the coffee table: because meeting fellow sufferers is very valuable and enjoyable.
