Velbert. The children of the open all-day care (OGS) at the Gerhart-Hauptmann-School donated the prize money they won to those affected by the earthquake disaster in Turkey and Syria.

Instead of toys, the children wanted to use the money they had won to buy urgently needed donations in kind for the earthquake victims in Turkey/Syria. The children from the all-day care provided by the AWO came third for a home-made Christmas tree and won 100 euros. Since January, suggestions for new game material for the support have been collected, but then everything turned out differently.

When the great earthquake in the border region of Turkey and Syria claimed many victims, the children voted to invest their prize money in needed hygiene and baby items and to take part in the Niederberg food bank in Velbert’s appeal for donations for the earthquake victims.

The AWO educators accompanied and supported the children in planning and carrying out their fundraising campaign by looking for the desired items in the drugstore, calculating the costs and buying them together with six children drawn by lot. The purchases were presented to the large group. Since the call for donations to the
entire school was expanded, further donations from parents and students were added.

The children had a lot of fun sorting the donations and then packing them in boxes. The AWO in the district of Mettmann also supplemented the donation with other hygiene and baby items, so that some large boxes could be brought to the Niederberg table. Accompanied by three AWO educators, six children drawn by lot pulled a wagon with donation boxes from the school to the Niederberg table on Mettmanner Straße. The joy of the donations, the humanity and helpfulness of the children was great among the employees of the Niederberg table.
