With the objective of guaranteeing quality and patient safety in the care processes in all the establishments of the National Health System, the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) held the “Health Quality Strengthening and Improvement Workshop 2023”. The space was led by the expert in quality in healthcare systems, José Joaquín Mira, from the Miguel Hernández University, Elche-Spain.

Delegations from the zonal coordinations of the MSP, the National Agency for Health Regulation, Control and Surveillance (ARCSA), the National Institute for Organ Donation and Transplantation (INDOT), and the National Institute for Public Health Research (INSPI) participated in the event.

Likewise, health units of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS), Social Security Institute of the Armed Forces (ISSFA), Social Security Institute of the National Police (ISSPOL) and Complementary Private Health Network.

For the Spanish speaker, the challenge of obtaining safe care is a desire of all citizens, professionals and health institutions. “First you have to land the theories and tools available to daily practice. There is no standard suit that fits everyone at all times; what counts is to gradually improve with a clear strategy that tells us where we want to go”.

The workshop addressed topics such as quality and safety of the patient – user, quality improvement cycle, safety culture in health centers, health care costs, criteria, indicators and quality standards, clinical risk management, frequency and consequence of adverse events, among other topics.

Ivonne Martínez, National Director of Quality, Patient Safety and Health Control of the MSP, also spoke during the workshop. “We seek to guarantee the quality of the care we provide with a focus on safety in risk management and thus have a user experience in accordance with the expectations that patients have.”

For this State portfolio, it is a priority and a commitment to institutionalize patient safety in all establishments of the National Health System.
