Amazon’s chief real estate officer, John Schotler, told Bloomberg that the company “remains committed” to Arlington, but is delaying the ambitious project, after conducting a “reevaluation of our office plans to make sure they fit our business needs and to create An excellent experience for our employees.”

He emphasized that the company is not giving up the headquarters: its relatively small wing – two towers that are expected to house 14,000 workers starting this June – will be completed as planned. But the work on the larger wing – three 22-story towers, and between them a kind of futuristic spiral tower, with trees inside and out and open meeting spaces – will be postponed until an unknown date. This is after the huge project was only approved in April 2022, and Amazon then debated whether to start work immediately or wait a little, and finally committed to start in the first half of 2023.
