Baghdad / Obelisk: The Parliamentary Integrity Committee revealed, on Sunday, that it had stopped an operation to seize the Green Belt area in Najaf in order to turn it into an investment project.

Committee member MP Hadi al-Salami said, “The green belt area covers an area of ​​1,200 dunums, and it was approved in the urban planning to be a separator between the residential complexes and the industrial cities area northwest of the governorate center.”

He pointed out that “some personalities affiliated with influential parties tried to change the gender of the land from a green area to a residential complex area, but the Parliamentary Integrity Committee was able to stop the project and return the land to its original use as a green area,” noting that “the area was chosen to be a green belt, adjacent to Residential investment complexes are subject to environmental determinants, and therefore cannot be manipulated in light of the desertification that is sweeping the region and the resulting dust storms that negatively affect the health of citizens.

And he continued, “The Parliamentary Integrity Committee is currently working on following up investigations into cases marred by suspicions of corruption in each of Najaf International Airport, the Najaf Investment Commission, the Najaf Capital of Islamic Culture project for 2012 and the model cemetery, in addition to cases in Najaf municipality and urban planning.”
