Attack took place in Jaboatão dos Guararapes (PE)
A 14-year-old teenager was attacked by a shark this Sunday morning (5), on Piedade beach, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Pernambuco. According to Samu, who helped the victim, the incident occurred around 11:20 am.
The animal attacked the right thigh of the minor who was taken by helicopter to the ICU of Samu, in the neighborhood of Derby, central area of Recife. Afterwards, the victim was taken to Hospital da Restauração, in the same region.
According to information from G1, the boy underwent a surgical procedure, with specialists in traumatology and vascular surgery, and his condition is serious.
Bathing was prohibited in the area
In the place where the episode took place, near Igrejinha de Piedade, shark attacks are more common and entry into the sea was prohibited in the region.
According to the Civil Defense advisor of the Jaboatão city hall, Colonel Artur Paiva, the stretch of more than two kilometers in length has been banned since July 2021, when the last attack in the area was recorded.
“We are insisting with the population and traders not to enter the waters, because, really, there is a very great risk. In fact, the smallest was hit in the thigh and was in a shallower area. In other words, the animals have closer to the seaside”, informed the colonel to G1.
According to the State Committee for Monitoring Incidents with Sharks (Cemit), this is the 15th case registered at the site.
“The prohibition, since 1999, is for sports, diving and swimming, but since July 2021, the place is also prohibited for sea bathing, after the issuance of a municipal decree”, says the note issued by Cemit this Sunday.
