Mexico City, March 5 (AP) — The Croatian Donna Vekic gave a surprise on Sunday and defeated the French Caroline Garcia 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to be crowned champion of the Monterey Open.

Vekic, who was the third seed in the mexican tournamentbattalion for almost three hours to get the fourth championship of his career.

The Croatian, who is 31 in the world and has not been crowned since last year in Courmayeur, has a solid season in which he is now 10-2 and in which he reached the quarterfinals in the past Australian Open.
