Salem: The police arrested the 16th person in the case of 94 lakh rupees fraud by pawning fake jewelery in Salem.
There is a private bank near Four Road, Salem. There, from 2010 to 2020, fraud up to 94 lakh rupees was found by pawning fake jewellery. In this regard, the then bank manager Deivamani reported to Salem Metropolitan Crime Branch. In it, he said, ‘Many people, including a bank jewelery appraiser, Karuppur, Waterpotty Sakthivel, 60, were involved in the fraud’.
Subsequently, Sakthivel surrendered before the Salem Criminal Arbitration Court. The case was transferred to the Salem Commercial Crime Investigation Unit for investigation. Out of 25 people who were involved in the fraud, 15 people were subsequently arrested.
Manjunathan, 50, who was absconding for a year and a half and owned a panchar shop in Nethimed, Salem, was arrested the day before yesterday. He pawned the fake jewelery and obtained a loan of Rs 1.77 lakh and was an accomplice in the fraud. This brings the number of arrests to 16. A person involved in fraud has paid the amount. Of the remaining eight, four were granted anticipatory bail. Police said they are looking for the remaining four.
