POTENZA (ITALPRESS) – “Not far from here, on the coasts of Calabria, a few days ago a tragic event occurred which involved the emotion of our country. First of all, the Afghan refugees brought to mind what our country did almost two years ago when the Taliban were occupying Kabul, to bring to Italy not only our soldiers on missions, but all the Afghan citizens who had collaborated with the exhibition mission. We have not left anyone, we have welcomed everyone here in Italy”. Thus the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, participating in the inauguration of the 2022-2023 academic year of the University of Basilicata, in the fortieth anniversary of the foundation, in reference to the shipwreck of refugees on the coast of Crotone.
“This drama – added the president – brings to mind the television images of the large crowd of Afghans at Kabul airport begging for a lift to go elsewhere. This makes us understand why entire families, people who see no future, try to leave their land with suffering, to have the possibility of a future elsewhere. Thus, in the face of the dramatic event that has taken place, condolences must be translated into concrete, operational choices on the part of everyone: from Italy, for its part, from the European Union and all the countries that are part of it, because this is the real answer to give to what happened”.
