Lula refuses to sign declaration against dictatorship in Nicaragua

by time news

As GospelMais has been reporting for months, the dictatorship implemented by Daniel Ortega, in Nicaragua, has been harshly persecuting Christians and anyone who opposes the local leftist regime, something that was criticized by 55 countries in a joint statement released by the United Nations. (UN).

The Lula government, in turn, did not sign the declaration! Instead of condemning the violations committed by Ortega, Itamaraty preferred to remain silent, thus transmitting an indirect message of connivance with the persecution of Christians and other victims of the dictatorship in Nicaragua.

Even Chile, currently governed by leftist Gabriel Boric, signed the declaration, acknowledging Ortega’s abuses. In addition, in Latin America, the governments of Peru, Guatemala, Paraguay, Colombia and Ecuador signed.

The United States, Australia, Canada and France were also some of the countries that endorsed the UN document condemning the Ortega dictatorship, according to information from Revista Oeste.

many violations

In the declaration, the countries accuse the government of Nicaragua of committing, for example, “extrajudicial executions, arbitrary arrests, torture, arbitrary deprivation of nationality and the right to remain in one’s country”.

According to the document, these violations “are not an isolated phenomenon, but the product of the deliberate dismantling of democratic institutions and the destruction of civic and democratic space”.

These offenses, according to the UN, constitute “widespread violations of human rights that amount to crimes against humanity are being committed against civilians by the government of Nicaragua for political reasons”.

The position that implies complicity on the part of the Lula government in the face of Ortega’s abuses does not seem strange, considering that last year, during a presidential debate with former president Jair Bolsonaro, the PT member went so far as to say that he felt “proud” already have been on the side of the dictator.

“If Daniel Ortega is wrong, the people of Nicaragua should punish Daniel Ortega”, Lula said at the time. “I was very proud that on July 19, 1980, I went to participate in the commemoration of the anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution that overthrew a dictator named Somoza, who was 30 years old”.
