Rohingya refugees demand $ 15 billion in damages against Facebook

by time news

London: Rohingya refugees have filed a lawsuit against Facebook seeking $ 15 billion in damages. Lawyers in California have filed a lawsuit alleging that Facebook’s arrival in Myanmar helped spread hate speech and misinformation and incited violence. A UK law firm for Rohingya refugees has also sent a notice to Facebook.

The complaint alleges that Facebook’s algorithm has increased and disseminated hate speech against the Rohingya, and that Facebook has tacitly permitted hate speech. Facebook’s internal records also state that it has failed to define and control hate speech and misinformation.

Racial violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar has killed at least seven million people and displaced more than seven million. In 2018, UN human rights experts investigating the attacks on the Rohingya also accused Facebook of playing a role in spreading hate speech. Facebook was launched in Myanmar in 2011.
