The images of the earthquake disaster in his native country are hard for Kadir Daglar to bear. “It’s an unimaginable catastrophe,” says the retired vocational school teacher from Dorsten about the February 6 earthquake.

The honorary chairman of the Federation of Turkish Parents’ Associations in North Rhine-Westphalia, who was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2004 for his services to the education of children of Turkish origin, knows that many international aid organizations take care of the people in the earthquake area and take care of their most urgent needs. But he also knows that thousands of school buildings have been destroyed and there are no longer any places for education in the rubble. An unbearable thought for the educator.

He won over the Association of Turkish Teachers’ Associations in Germany (ATÖF) as a comrade-in-arms for his idea. Daglar: “We would like to set up school containers in the Turkish earthquake area so that classes can take place there again as soon as possible.”

Like Celal Aydemir, chairman of the Turkish Teachers’ Association Ruhr in Essen, he is particularly concerned about the children, some of whom are on their own. “With school containers, we can make it possible for everyday school life to be resumed quickly in order to give the affected children a bit of normality again.”

20,000 euros per school

According to Kadir Daglar, a container that is already fully equipped as a school can be had for 20,000 euros. A company from Ankara builds these containers at a reasonable price, a contractor and former student of Aydemir wants to equip the containers with the necessary school furniture.

The Association of Turkish Teachers’ Associations has contacts with the school authorities and teachers in the crisis area. And when the time comes, Kadir Daglar would personally “supervise” the construction.

Kadir Daglar, who is very well known and respected in Dorsten, is hoping for as many donations as possible for the project. He was already able to present the idea to Mayor Tobias Stockhoff.

“I very much welcome the fact that there are so many diverse projects and such a limitless commitment to alleviating the needs of the people in the Syrian-Turkish earthquake area. Such and similar local projects are a supplement to the concentrated and coordinated services of the large aid organizations,” said the mayor.
