Fast food or traditional restaurants? Find out which brands dominate in your city

by time news

McDonald’s or French bistro? Burger King or Italian restaurant? The choice may seem difficult, depending on your budget or the mood of the moment. If France remains the world leader in gastronomy, fast foods are taking up more and more space.

With 13,950 establishments, Île-de-France concentrates more than 30% of the country’s fast food brands. But traditional restaurants are trying to resist. Discover, commune by commune, the importance of fast food compared to traditional brands.

At the level of the departments, in half of them in Île-de-France, fast food has already taken over. In Essonne (51.8%), in Val-de-Marne (50.2%), Val-d’Oise (52.8%) and Seine-Saint-Denis (58.2%), the fast-foods have become the majority compared to traditional restaurants, whereas they were not ten years ago.

The Parisian exception

The most striking examples, Seine-et-Marne, Essonne and Seine-Saint-Denis have seen the ratio of fast food compared to traditional restaurants increase by 14 points! Hauts-de-Seine and Yvelines remain reluctant, even if the share of fast food exceeded 41% in 2021. Paris is an exception, being the department with the smallest presence of fast food in 2021 (34.1%), and the smallest increase in this share in the last ten years (6.8 points).
