Olaf Scholes was formally sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Germany. This follows the end of Merkel’s 16-year term as prime minister.
A secret ballot was held in the lower house of parliament to elect a new prime minister. Out of a total of 707 votes, 395 voted in favor of Olaf Scholes and elected him Prime Minister. Following this, Scholes formally became the new Prime Minister.
Scholes’ Left Social Democrats won a majority in last September’s election. However the drag on coalition formation persisted. Following the conclusion of the current negotiations, a secret ballot was held to select the new Prime Minister. It is noteworthy that when Merkel was prime minister, Scholes served as finance minister in his cabinet.
