New Delhi: Russia has released the trailer of the first film shot in space. In 2021, he spent 12 days on the International Space Station and shot the scenes of the movie ‘The Challenge’.
A cardiac surgeon and a team of doctors go to the space station to treat an unconscious cosmonaut. Russian actress Yuria Perisild plays the cardiac surgeon who leads the team.
The scene was shot jointly by the Russian space agency Roscosmos, Russia’s Channel One and Yellow and Black and White Studios.
The film also stars Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov, Novisky, and Yoter Dubrov.
A 35-40 minute long scene in the film was shot on the space station. ‘The Challenge’ will release on April 12.
Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, said the film aims to raise the profile of Russia’s space missions and glorify the work of cosmonauts.
Roscosmos announced this movie shooting project in November 2020. Actress Yulia Perisild and the film’s director and producer Klim Shipenko along with Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov traveled to the station in October 2021 and spent 12 days there.
The Challenge is the first feature film shot in space, but not the first video shot in space. In 1982, a video titled ‘Return from Orbit’ explaining the mission was filmed on the Salyut 7 space station launched by the Soviet Union and on the Soyuz T-9 probe used to travel there. Later, after 24 years, the traveler Richard Garriott, who reached the International Space Station with private support, has also shot a short film titled ‘Apogee of Fear’.
A 2002 IMAX documentary narrated by Tom Cruise and a 2012 eight-minute sci-fi film were filmed here.
In 2020, Tom Cruise and director Doug Lyman announced plans to travel to the space station and shoot a movie, but that has yet to materialize.
