the CEA supports two fourth-generation reactor projects

DECRYPTION – As part of the France 2030 plan, the research organization has selected two start-ups that want to develop innovative and safe power plants.

Failing to have been able to build its own Astrid experimental nuclear reactor, designed on the improved principle of Phénix and Superphénix, but abandoned by the government of Édouard Philippe in 2019, the CEA (Commissariat for Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies ) supports two private projects for fourth generation fast neutron reactors.

It is « innovative nuclear reactors that will be offered as part of the France 2030 plan », explains Laurence Petit, Deputy Director of Innovation at the CEA. These projects could obtain initial aid of 10 million euros for two years.

Then, from 2024, each company, if selected, will be able to benefit from 80 million euros to establish its “proof of concept”. Then, the France 2030 plan plans to allocate, from 2026, up to 300 million to create a first prototype over five years.
