A military helicopter carrying India’s chief of staff, Bipin Rawat, and other senior officials crashed in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, the Indian Air Force said in a statement this morning (Wednesday). Pictures broadcast on television showed the helicopter burning while locals tried to turn it off. Rawat is the most senior official in the Indian Army. He is also an advisor to the Ministry of Defense. He began his tenure in the new position last year after retiring as army commander.

The Press Trust of India news agency reported that the Mi-17V5 helicopter was on its way from the Air Force Base to the Army Defense College when it crashed near Conor in Tamil Nadu.
