Ratan Tata follows only Tata Trusts. Tata Trust is the charitable arm of the Tata Group. Although Ratan Tata does not focus on Tata’s businesses, he is fully involved in the foundation.
What is the history of this Tata Trust? We have to go back 130 years to know that. Jamshedji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group, remains a great inspiration for entrepreneurship even today. Ratan Tata started the JN Tata Endowment Fund in 1892.
The objective of this endowment fund is to help Indians acquire higher education. At that time, Jamshedji Tata provided various facilities like training work, day care for children, primary education for the children of female employees working in the mill, free medical care for all employees, pension fund, provident fund, pregnancy benefits, compensation to the families of the employees who died in the accident.
The JN Tata endowment fund planted by Jamshedji Tata today has grown into the banyan tree of Tata Trust. In 1919, Ratan Tata started the Tata Trust with a fund of Rs 80 lakhs. Even today Tata Foundation is doing various charitable works including education and medicine.
